Media Conduct
As a volunteer, you may encounter journalists or media representatives during your shifts. While media coverage is important for the success of the FISU Games, it is essential to follow proper communication protocols.
Since volunteers play a big role in making the FISU Games a success, you are welcome to share your personal experiences – but you are not authorised to speak on behalf of the event organisers, athletes, or officials.
Key Guidelines
You can share your experience as a volunteer (why you joined, what you enjoy, etc.) Your behaviour reflects the event’s reputation. Avoid making personal comments about athletes, officials, or other volunteers.
While you can’t speak on behalf of organizers, knowing general event information (e.g., venue layout, main attractions) helps provide helpful responses. Do not share unconfirmed information. Do not discuss restricted areas, security protocols, or confidential details.
Identifying Media Personnel
Journalists can be from television, radio, online platforms, or print media. Some may also be independent bloggers or social media influencers. Treat them professionally but ensure they have proper accreditation. Accredited journalists will have an official press badge and may carry professional recording equipment. Journalists are typically expected to operate in designated media areas (e.g. Media Workrooms, Photo Positions, Media Tribune, Mixed Zone). If you notice media personnel in restricted areas, inform the Media Operations Team and direct them politely to the Media Welcome Desk.
How to Handle Media Requests
When you are approached for an interview, and if you feel comfortable speaking to the media, keep these points in mind:
Rule #1: If you do not want to be interviewed politely decline.
Keep it short and positive: Talk about your experience and what makes the Games special.
Avoid Speculation: If you don’t know the answer to a question, don’t guess. It’s better to say, “I’m not sure, but the Media Operations Team can help.”
Report Any Media Issues: If a journalist disregards protocols, behaves aggressively, or tries to pressure you into answering, inform the Media Operations Team immediately.
Respect Athlete and Official Privacy: Even if you overhear conversations or see behind-the-scenes moments, never share private or sensitive information.
Social Media Guidelines
Social media is a great way to share your volunteer experience, but it’s important to post responsibly. Follow these guidelines to ensure a positive and professional online presence.
