Meet the Stars: Hambüchen and Krüger Provide Insight into Mental Health in Sports

Exciting lectures and discussions marked the start of the FISU World Conference 2025 on Thursday at the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum. The highlight of the first day was a panel discussion in the "Meet the Stars" program featuring guests Fabian Hambüchen and Lea Krüger on the topic of "Mental Health in Elite Sports".

Domitila Barros and Lena Zaubzer confidently led the hour-long conversation on stage. Hambüchen, Olympic champion and former world-class gymnast, along with fencer Lea Krüger, who also serves on the board of Athletes Germany, provided insights into their careers. It became evident that mental health in elite sports is not merely a "nice-to-have" but an essential key factor for long-term success—and beyond that, for a healthy life after retirement.

Hambüchen, a multiple Olympic, world, and European champion, now engages as a speaker and coach post-retirement. The 37-year-old explained why he would have appreciated more support during his active career as a young athlete, particularly in challenging situations.

Krüger, passionately advocating for athlete rights, has long publicly discussed mental pressures in elite sports and their impacts. She also addresses frequently tabooed topics such as eating disorders among professional athletes. Fundamentally, she emphasized the need for more independent support systems, a better network of therapists, and assistance for athletes' environments.
