Flame Relay

The Flame Relay is a key event leading up to the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games. A symbol of unity and connection in the world of sport, it illustrates how the same passion and determination which drives us in study and competition has the power to break down barriers and build bridges between cultures. This unifying event creates an unforgettable experience for the academic community and the sporting world.

The Stages

The excitement began in Torino, Italy, in January 2025, when the Torch for the FISU Games Summer was lit during a FISU Games Winter for the first time. From its bright start in the birthplace of the FISU World University Games, the Flame Relay passes into Germany, where highlights include stops in the six Host Cities of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games - Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Hagen, and Berlin.

Stage 1: Torino

FISU feels at home in Torino. FISU was founded in this magnificent city in 1949. Torino hosted the first ever Summer Universiade ten years later, in 1959.

Stages: 2-11

The Flame Relay passed through Munich, Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Frankfurt, Erfurt, Cologne, Hamburg, Lübeck, Wuppertal, and Dortmund – greeted in each city with sporting enthusiasm and active student participation.

Stage 12: Berlin

In Berlin, the torch passed iconic landmarks and sports venues, led by famous athletes; highlights included a tech-inspired university relay and a grand finish at the Berlin Half Marathon.

Stage 13: Hagen

In Hagen, the Flame Relay united the local community with celebrations, sports activities, and enthusiastic students carrying the flame through the city streets.

Stage 14: Bochum

Pupils from Bochum’s Elite Schools of Sport received the torch at their school and carried it enthusiastically through the city to the town hall, where a symbolic ceremony unveiled the Host City plaque.

Stage 15: Mülheim

The Flame Relay brought true FISU Games spirit to Mülheim through school events, a community run, and the unveiling of the Host City plaque.

Stage 16: Essen

The torch stopped in Essen, bringing together pupils, students, and citizens for a vibrant celebration of sport and community, before joining the Volunteer Kick-off to officially launch the volunteer journey with energy and inspiration.

Stage 17: Duisburg

Duisburg welcomed the Flame Relay with a torch run from campus to city centre, a Host City celebration, and a vibrant volunteer mile - before lighting up the University Athletics Championships the next day.

The Torch

Torch

The Torch of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games combines tradition with transformation. It symbolises the history and evolution of the Rhine-Ruhr region, reflecting its unique connection between the past and the future. As a powerful emblem, the Torch embodies the region’s cultural heritage while shining a light on its innovative aspirations. The design incorporates characteristic elements of the region, telling the story of its journey from its mining, manufacturing and engineering roots, to a post-industrial, vibrant cultural landscape.

Torchbearers

The Torch will continue to travel through Germany under the motto 'Everybody is all-in’, stopping in the capital city, Berlin, and other well-known locations on its way to the Rhine-Ruhr region and its final home at the FISU Games. The Torch will be carried by exceptional personalities, including athletes, artists, and rising stars. Students, children, and visitors from universities across Germany will also be involved.
